The design is drawn on the burlap, then this foundation is stretched on a frame and the hooking is started. If the cloth strips are narrow and the loops are low and very close together, a beautifully fine texture results.

A much faster job can be done if the loops are heavier, longer and farther apart. '   

Sometimes the pile is cut to make a softer surface, sometimes there is a combination of cut and uncut pile. Often the design is carved by clipping around each motif so that it stands out from ;the background.

Connoisseurs consider the very closely hooked, uncut pile nigs the gems of their collections, though the elaborate carved florals are highly prized too.
